Road Testing BMW's Hydrogen 7

Jules Verne, in his 1874 novel The Mysterious Island, described hydrogen as an "inexhaustible source of heat and light." A little over 130 years later, BMW is testing the theory with an innovative internal combustion engine that burns the lightest element much like gasoline, only cleaner.

Wired News was invited to test-drive one of BMW's new Hydrogen 7 automobiles recently. It proved a serious step forward in using hydrogen as a potential energy source for cars, while showing defects that make the concept a clear work in progress.

BMW is the only major carmaker to bring a car with a hydrogen-combustion engine beyond the prototype stage.

Hypermiling

Hypermilers are the Hell's Angels of miles per gallon. These guys and gals play for keeps. A hypermiler is someone who regularly beats the EPA fuel economy estimates for a particular vehicle. The term is most closely associated with hybrid drivers. It's easy to see why. Hybrids make fuel economy hard to ignore because their whiz-bang video dashboards are continually rubbing the driver's mpg number in his or her nose. With fuel economy staring you in the face 24/7, you're almost guaranteed to get hooked on fuel economy like a hapless tourist wandering the slot-infested streets of Las Vegas. Even though the term hypermiler got its start with hybrid drivers, it's equally applicable to drivers of non-hybrid vehicles. Especially if they take it to extremes.

The Mini Mokes was perhaps the most loved sun buggy of the 60's, 70's and even the 80's. What sealed its success was the simple lack of doors. The convenience of jumping in and out of a car without opening doors and then the added bonus of driving around topless made it very appealing.

Today, riding on that success, Fiat have created the Fiat Jolly Panda. Although it sounds like a Japanese game show, this car is a successful remake of all the things that made the Moke a hit. The FJP was first launched over summer where it was used to ferry VIP's on the island of Capri.

The people responsible for the originals that defined an era of excessive force and the soul-stirring 540 Camaro SuperCoupe -- Joel Ehrenpreis, Larry Jaworske, Joel Rosen and Marty Schorr -- have done it again. The latest addition is a pair of updated, power-packed Baldwin-Motion big-block Camaros that continue the tradition that started shortly after Chevrolet introduced its first generation Camaro in 1967.

New for 2006, the 1969 Baldwin-Motion SS-427 and Phase III Camaros capture the timeless passion and performance of two of the most sought-after ultra-performance Chevys. They are available in coupe or convertible models and come standard with air conditioning and contemporary creature comforts, handling and braking.

By the way, bring along at least $169,000.....

Thanks Russ

God Loves My New Lexus

The new 2007 Lexus LS, the ridiculously silent uber-cush ultra-lux Valium-on-wheels hunk of $75,000 Japanese transportation from Toyota's most prestige brand, can now parallel park itself.

Here is the YouTube video. Here is the full breakdown of this car's astounding luxury features. Here is what you do: You pull up alongside the car just in front of a parking space. You put your car in reverse, which activates the rear camera and sensors. A diagram of arrows appears on the nav screen. You indicate where you want the car to go. You press Park and let go of the wheel.

Then: Take a sip of your Remy Martin and send $50,000 to the Republican Party as you silently give thanks to the Gods of Saudi Arabia and megacorporate conglomerates that your tax bracket is so stratospheric that it still affords you a massive V8 luxury automobile in the age of war and oil ravages and unchecked gluttony and the meltdown of Antarctica. Cars and movies go together like peanut butter and jelly, and for more than a century Hollywood has commingled cars with cinema, each time forcing us to flock to theaters like the obedient lemmings we are. And when affordably priced DVDs started showing up, a lot of us started accumulating collections of car movies that rival our collections of stolen road signs, rubber scraped from defunct dragstrips, and Hot Wheels.

There are literally hundreds upon hundreds of films that could fit into a loose definition of "car movie," so we pared this list of 40 indispensable titles down to include only films available on DVD and only films that were first released in theaters.

The humble Volvo Estate has been voted the best car to have sex in. The 'passion wagon'- renowned for its reliability on the road and spacious interior - has lived through more steamy encounters than any other vehicle.

And the Mercedes Benz Sprinter Van comes in second place, proving that the 'white-van-man' has great pulling power.

The poll of 4,000 people, conducted by car insurer yesinsurance.co.uk, placed the surfers' favourite VW Camper Van in third place.

The Audi R8

Audi has incorporated the name and the genes of the five-time Le Mans winner, the Audi R8, into a spectacular sports car. Three years after the unveiling of the Audi Le Mans quattro concept car, the production version will be making its debut at the Paris Motor Show in the guise of the new Audi R8 mid-engined sports model. It is a fascinating driving machine and the sporty pinnacle of the Audi brand. The mid-mounted 420 bhp V8 FSI engine, quattro permanent four-wheel drive and Audi Space Frame aluminium body form the basis for truly outstanding driving dynamics. The Audi R8 will be available to order from 28 September 2006; first deliveries will be made in the first half of 2007.

just keeps on going. Irv Gordon, Volvo's "Two Million Mile Man," just became the "Four Million Kilometer Man," breaking the four million kilometer barrier in the same shiny red 1966 Volvo P1800 he has been driving for more than 40 years.

Sixty-four-year-old retired science teacher and Long Island native Irv Gordon made history in 2002 when he reached a milestone no other individual had ever accomplished in more than 100 years of the automobile: driving two million miles in the same vehicle. He continues to break records with his latest one-car feat.

Japan's Honda Motor Co. has done it again. The car maker that floored the world in the 1970s with the first gasoline engine to meet U.S. clean air guidelines without a catalytic converter said it has developed a new and simple diesel powertrain that is as clean as gasoline-fuelled cars.

The technology marks a big step forward for Honda at a time when rivals are racing to come up with ways to clear the world's strictest emissions regulations, called Tier II Bin 5, that the United States will usher in next year.

Diesel engines, which now power half of Europe's new cars, are slowly gaining traction with fuel-conscious consumers around the world since they typically get 30 percent better mileage than gasoline cars. Their weakness has been the higher exhaust levels of nitrogen oxide, a greenhouse gas.

Thanksgiving with the fam would be so much more bearable if Grandma were forced to pass the gravy around the front fender of a Lamborghini Gallardo. This odd display is set up outside the William Ashley store in downtown Toronto to promote a contest for a 20-piece set of fine china. The Gallardo was hoisted up with a crane and delicately set atop four tea cups beneath each wheel.

Barbie meets Beetle

The results can be interesting when you get two incredibly successful icons of our times together. In this case, Ms.Barbara Millicent Roberts, a.k.a Barbie, and Beetle have been brought together by Volkswagen in the all-pink Beetle Barbie limited edition car. The car is done up completely in pink, with the Barbie logo placed at strategic locations.

Purists will be pleased to note that even the lug nuts on the tires have not been spared. The trend continues inside the car, with the inserts in the leather seats, steering wheel, door panels and floor mats all splashed with the Barbie color.

Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione hits the web

The production version of the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione makes its debut in a couple of weeks at the Paris auto show, but thanks to Spanish site km77.com, photos and details are out on the web for all to see.The car is driven by a Maserati-sourced aluminum 4.7L V8 making 450 horsepower and 347 lb-ft of twist. A six-speed gearbox with paddle shifters channels power to the rear wheels and can also be operated in full automatic mode. Like the engine, the car's suspension is also a refugee from Maserati.

Lexus invited Gizmodo along for a ride in the new LS 460 L super rich guy sedan. The thing is packed to the gills with tech. In fact, I'd call it the most geeked-out car evar, next to the Tesla.

But even the Tesla car can't park itself. Explanation of how the Advanced Parking Guidance System works, information on how this thing rips CDs, and other e-goodies, after the jump.

Here's how it works.

For the average American, travelling in style is probably defined by that one time you rented a limousine on your way to the high school prom. For that other, more fickle überclass of America, the notion of luxury travel delves far deeper into our collective imagination. We all dream of the day when we could arrive at the office through the window in a blizzard of flying paper and jet exhaust, and just imagine how cool your kids would think you are when you pick them up at the park-n-ride in a personal blimp? Whether you want to expand your taste for opulence beyond your gadget repertoire — or just dream of a garage filled with high-tech vehicles — this list is for you.

New Cars: Class of 2007

From the brand new Ford Edge crossover to the cutting-edge Lexus GS 450h luxury hybrid sedan, here are the new models that will define the 2007 automotive year.

The M42 is a major British motorway that has a reputation for being a testbed for new roadside technology, with a current traffic management scheme including sensors for tracking traffic built into the road and variable speed limit signs every 500 meters. The latest piece of kit to be tested out during roadworks is a radar-assisted speeding sign that not only flashes when it detects a speeding car, but also displays the license plate number of said car.

Rod and Kulture

There are some hot rods I like because of their smooth, finished look, and there are some I just love in a raw, unfinished state. Can you tell which one this is?

First off, I love a traditional bomb that has a name other than Ford on it. While this Chevy has a Chevy in it, it’s not just any Chevy motor. Here’s the scoop:

When owner Bill Glass, of Maryland, was just four years old, a family friend gave him this ’34 Chevy. While he was still just a kid, Bill took it apart. Most stories end right there with a sad ending and a pile of rust, but not in this case. You see, Bill runs around with those So-What boys from Pennsylvania, and after a few other car builds, Bill began this project in 2004, and finished in just a year and a half.

Success in car industry is measured only through results of sale, although in the last decade this criterion started to lose value as well. Increased competition and lowered profitability resulted in continuous losses per sold car recorded by the leading car makers. It was caused by multiple reasons – from expensive labor and costs of restructuring to manufacturing deficiencies caused by trying to present the whole range of new cars as soon as possible, which inevitably led to many withdrawals and expensive corrections of the cars. Still, some cars gained the buyers’ trust all around the world. Different generations of cars such as Toyota Corolla, Volkswagen Golf or Honda Civic became more and more popular and sold in higher quantities.

So here are the top 5 world's most successful cars ever.

The Air Force Reserve Jet Car masterfully rolls along the runway, spewing smoke, flames and mini-sonic booms. It pulls into position and waits. Sometimes a naive pilot, who actually thinks he has a shot at winning, flies close to the deck and issues a race challenge. The car continues to wait as the plane circles to get into position. The plane comes in fast and as it passes over the Jet Car, the driver kicks it into action. The Jet Car accelerates from zero to 400 mph in about eight seconds -- that's less time than it takes to dial home on your cell phone. It's less time than it takes to get in your car and crank the engine. It's less time than it takes to back out of your driveway. It's less time than it takes the Jet Car to zoom past the plane it is racing. You can actually witness the Jet Car take on another unsuspecting victim at the McConnell Air Show, September 9 and 10.

Ford puts Aston Martin up for auction

Ford Motor put Aston Martin up for auction on Thursday as the troubled US carmaker began dismantling its stable of British luxury brands in the face of deep losses in its home market.

Ford has appointed an investment bank to handle the sale of the famous brand, for which it is understood to have pencilled in a price of more than $2bn – far higher than the value put on it by financial analysts. It is already in early talks with "interested parties", Ford said, although it could retain a minority stake.

The sale comes as Ford is considering which other brands it should sell to fund restructuring and reduce losses at Premier Automotive Group, its luxury carunit, which lost $162m in the second quarter. The luxury division was supposed to break even this year after losing $100m last year but Ford warned in July that it would again make a loss.

Let's Go

I know I would have fun driving around in this car. And to make even more of this. Their friends have real special cars as well. But what the hell is that fan doing on top of the car?

The Atomic Automobile

During the 1950s, much of the world was quivering with anticipation over the exciting prospects of nuclear power. Atomic energy promised to churn out clean, safe electricity that would be "too cheap to meter." It seemed that there was no energy problem too large or too small for the mighty atom to tackle during the glorious and modern Atomic Age.

It was during this honeymoon with nuclear energy– in 1957– that the Ford Motor Company unveiled the most ambitious project in their history: a concept vehicle which had a sleek futuristic look, emitted no harmful vapors, and offered incredible fuel mileage far beyond that of the most efficient cars ever built. This automobile-of-the-future was called the Ford Nucleon, named for its highly unique design feature… a pint-size atomic fission reactor in the trunk.

This is a great commercial for the new Skoda Octavia RS.

This may look like a very nice Lamborghini to you. Trust me when I say that is about to change very quickly.

Volkswagen has revealed its Iroc sports car concept - a car VW hopes will emulate the runaway success of the legendary Scirocco, which made its debut 33 years ago.

The daftly named Iroc’s shape - with a very long roof and steeply sloping rear - makes it look nice and aggressive, and its honeycomb grille is very Golf GTi. Massive rims, a crazed guppy fish front end and the acres of windscreen (yet tiny side windows) make this one mean mutha.

Inside, bucket seats, sports seatbelts, 300 litres of boot, and a striking dash set the tone. Two large and tastily designed round instrument gauges form the visual centre of the cockpit; the driver looks into two cylinders with 12 illuminated bars that create a 3D segmentation effect.

Worst Cars Ever Made

Top 10 Passenger Cars

The newly redesigned Toyota Camry returns to the top of the list as the most popular passenger car on MSN Autos for the second quarter of 2006, beating out the all-new Honda Civic.

Coming in third is the Honda Accord, followed by the Toyota Yaris, which replaces the ECHO. Toyota has the most models on the list with four in the top ten, including the fifth-place Corolla and the tenth-place Avalon.

In sixth place is the Caliber, Dodge's all-new entry-level sedan and replacement for the Neon.

Here's a car that takes some of the doom out of one doomsday scenario. If oil prices rise to heretofore unseen heights, the Volkswagen EcoRacer shows that sports cars can still be fun-even if they're powered by a diesel engine that gets 80 mpg.

The EcoRacer uses a carbon-fiber monocoque worthy of a Formula 1 machine. The engine, mounted amidships, is an early version of a new common rail diesel due in 2007. The result is a two-seater that pushes the sports-car envelope one full step beyond the likes of Lotus, Westfield, Caterham, and Ariel. Not only does it accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds and top out at 143 mph, according to VW, it also averages a miserly 80 mpg. The only reason to sniff at the EcoRacer is the scent of diesel exhaust, which adds pungence to the open-air driving experience. We took the orange-metallic head turner for a spin on the Pau Arnos circuit in the south of France.

ATTUMERCIAL

One of Ford's most senior executives has poured cold water on speculation that the company is planning to abandon Jaguar.

A sale of the loss-making West Midlands-based luxury brand has been touted by commentators since Ford announced last week that it had recruited former Goldman Sachs and Bank of America mergers and acquisitions specialist Kenneth Leet as adviser to group chairman and chief executive Bill Ford.

But comments by Mark Fields, Ford's president of the Americas and a former head of Ford of Europe, in the US yesterday suggested it would keep Jaguar, which sits alongside Land Rover, Aston Martin and Volvo in the group's Premier Automotive Group of luxury European brands.

A 911 Turbo Like No Other

I'm behind the wheel of Porsche's brand new 911 Turbo, and I'm doing 150 mph down the Autobahn.

The first thing I notice, besides the G-force of accelerating from a standstill to 60 mph in less than four seconds, is how normal and comfortable it feels to cruise at 130 mph and faster. In fact, driving is so comfortable at these speeds that a less cautious driver might feel inclined to steer with only one hand.

Bringing the car up to 150 mph and faster harbors another discovery: Not only does the Porsche feel as stable as it does at slower speeds, with the famous roar of the turbo motor kicking in at 5,000 rpm, the 911 Turbo feels like it could do more -- much more.

It's really happening: The Chevy Camaro is coming back as a production car, the Free Press has learned.

General Motors Corp. Chairman Rick Wagoner is expected to announce the resurrection of the legendary muscle car in a speech Thursday to an automotive conference in Traverse City.

The auto industry has been buzzing with speculation about GM's plans for the Camaro ever since the carmaker wowed the crowds at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in January with a stunning 400-horsepower concept. At a time when truck and SUV sales are softening and car sales are regaining momentum, a sexy new entry could give GM's entire passenger-car line a boost.

Research into the fuel cell continues at a brisk pace. After the Peugeot Fuel Cell Taxi and the H2O, new developments have lead to the miniaturisation and simplification of this technology, while still providing a practical range. To mark these developments, Peugeot has chosen to create an original concept vehicle to demonstrate this new technology: the Quark.

The Peugeot Quark is a two-seater, four-wheel drive vehicle that uses the integral working parts to also provide the visual appeal of the vehicle. Each component is stylized to highlight its specific function. The same applies to all parts in contact with the occupants, for example the passenger grab handles, the footboards and the body, which becomes almost an extension of the driver. The Quark chassis is the result of cooperation between stylists and engineers, which, ensures a perfect blend of aesthetic and technical prowess.

It's probably every boy's dream to once drive a supercar. It doesn't matter if you're young or old, you simply want to experience that feeling at least once in your life. Lamborghini is a manufacturer of real supercars that you will likely not ever get to drive. So what are the chances of you ever driving a tuned Lambo? Somewhere near zero I guess. So you'll going to have to do it with these pictures of a Hamann Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder 2006. Good luck.
