Wired News was invited to test-drive one of BMW's new Hydrogen 7 automobiles recently. It proved a serious step forward in using hydrogen as a potential energy source for cars, while showing defects that make the concept a clear work in progress.

BMW is the only major carmaker to bring a car with a hydrogen-combustion engine beyond the prototype stage.

Volkswagen has revealed its Iroc sports car concept - a car VW hopes will emulate the runaway success of the legendary Scirocco, which made its debut 33 years ago.

The daftly named Iroc’s shape - with a very long roof and steeply sloping rear - makes it look nice and aggressive, and its honeycomb grille is very Golf GTi. Massive rims, a crazed guppy fish front end and the acres of windscreen (yet tiny side windows) make this one mean mutha.

Inside, bucket seats, sports seatbelts, 300 litres of boot, and a striking dash set the tone. Two large and tastily designed round instrument gauges form the visual centre of the cockpit; the driver looks into two cylinders with 12 illuminated bars that create a 3D segmentation effect.

Here's a car that takes some of the doom out of one doomsday scenario. If oil prices rise to heretofore unseen heights, the Volkswagen EcoRacer shows that sports cars can still be fun-even if they're powered by a diesel engine that gets 80 mpg.

The EcoRacer uses a carbon-fiber monocoque worthy of a Formula 1 machine. The engine, mounted amidships, is an early version of a new common rail diesel due in 2007. The result is a two-seater that pushes the sports-car envelope one full step beyond the likes of Lotus, Westfield, Caterham, and Ariel. Not only does it accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds and top out at 143 mph, according to VW, it also averages a miserly 80 mpg. The only reason to sniff at the EcoRacer is the scent of diesel exhaust, which adds pungence to the open-air driving experience. We took the orange-metallic head turner for a spin on the Pau Arnos circuit in the south of France.

The very first photos of the Volkswagen Tiguan were snapped by spy photographers this week. The car appears to be further along in the development process than one might expect. Codenamed VW416, the Tiguan is riding on a PL/PQ48 platform – a combination of the Golf/Rabbit and Passat platforms – one which will eventually be shared with Audi’s A4, A5 and Q5.

The IndyCycle is a street-legal hybrid of an Indycar and a motorcycle (750cc+). The inspiration for creating my IndyCycle came from my interest in Kit Cars (thanks to my brother, John) as well as Indycars, the Tri-Magnum, and an urge to drive a motorcycle without the fear of my mother dismembering it with a sledgehammer.

I was inspired by the many other types of three-wheelers in the world, but my IndyCycle design was the first to combine the speed and accelleration of a motorcycle with the aerodynamics and handling of an Indycar. This does not mean that my IndyCycle can outperform either, but the experience of driving it on the street is akin to no other vehicle, and may possibly be the closest thing to driving an Indycar on the road, without the cost and legal issues of the latter

Toyota Soars, Passes Ford to Rank No. 2 in U.S. Sales

Toyota Motor Corp. passed Ford Motor Co. in July to become the No. 2 automaker in the U.S. for the first time as U.S. automakers said sales declined more than 20 percent after rising fuel prices curbed demand for light trucks.

Toyota sold 241,826 vehicles in the month, a 12 percent increase, while Ford dropped 34 percent to 241,399. Sales of General Motors Corp., the world's largest automaker, dropped 23 percent. and DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler fell 37 percent. Honda Motor Co., the No. 2 Japanese automaker in the U.S. behind Toyota, gained 6 percent while Nissan Motor Co. dropped 20 percent.

The declines at GM, Ford and Chrysler marked the fourth- straight monthly drop for the U.S.-based automakers. Asian automakers, led by Toyota and Honda, gained U.S. market share for a 12th consecutive month.

This is an attempt to list which side of the road people drive on around the world, and to find some reasons why.

The most authoritative reference that I am aware of on this subject is a book called The Rule of the Road: An International Guide to History and Practice by Peter Kincaid (Greenwood Press, 1986; 239 pages; ISBN 0-313-25249-1). The book is out of print and difficult to obtain although you might be able to find it in libraries. The Rule of the Road contains a lot of details about why various countries use one side of the road or the other and how they have switched between them. I have relied on Kincaid's book for many of the historical questions in this document. The list of countries in this document is not taken from Kincaid, and it includes some additional territories as well as being more recently updated.

AM General started making High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (or Humvees) for the U.S. Army in 1983. They started building the civilian models (or Hummers) in 1992.

In 1999, General Motors acquired exclusive ownership of the Hummer brand name and the marketing rights from AM General, but AMG still continues to manufacture the H1 Hummers for the civilian market. The H2 is GM's own version of the original Humvee, and it is built on GM's Suburban frame.

All Hummer dealers are required (as a condition to holding the franchise) to organize 4 Hummer off-road events per year!

A number of years ago I saw a one page calendar that showed all the Ford pickup trucks from the first one to the present day. I thought , what a nice idea. I thought that I might try something similar with some of the car pictures I have collected.
I have been collecting pictures of Studebaker, Packard Nash, Hudson, Jeeps and pickup trucks for some time now and I first wrote a web page on the Studebaker.

Then one on Jeeps, Packard and the Hudson and Nash followed. Next came the Kieser and Henry J. Now I with the help of one of my visitors have written on on the Crosley Now I thought I would try a web page on the Pickup Trucks of the 1940's to the 1960's. I also included some panel trucks and early SUV's of this period. They just seemed to fit right in with the pickups.

We like to start this blog with my all time favourite car.
A muscle car. The dodge charger. The '68 or '69 version.
The Dodge Charger was a response to the fastback fad started by the Mustang, but on a much larger scale.

The Charger was launced in 1966, based on the midsize Dodge Coronet model and became a sales hit with its fuselage styling of 1968. From the beginning, it packed serious muscle, from the 318 V8 to the all mighty 426 Hemi. Finally, the MOPAR street crowd had some serious midsize muscle to bring to the party.
